Where is it today?

For the past 75 years, the sengol was forgotten and it was tucked away in a glass box in Anand Bhavan museum in Prayagraj among Nehru’s personal belongings. Incredibly, it was labeled as a walking stick presented to Nehru.

After 75 years, a hunt began for the sengol so that it may adorn the new Parliament building which is all set to be inaugurated on May 28, 2023.

The hunt was launched, thanks to a letter from the famous Bharatanatyam dancer Dr Padma Subrahmanyam who wrote to the Indian Prime Minister’s office after reading an article about the sengol in a Tamil publication Tughlaq as well as a book on Devaram by author Subramanian.

“I was interested in knowing where the sengol had been kept,” said Dr Padma Subrahmanyam in an interview to a television channel.

“It came as a very pleasant surprise for me. It was a dream come true for me. It is a greater event now that the new Parliament will house this sceptre as the symbol of power transfer from the British government to our government” she said.

On 28th May 2023, PM Narendra Modi installed the Sengol to its rightful place in the Parliament building, near the Lok Sabha Speaker’s chair. It will be kept safe and sacred and will be periodically brought out during special events.
