Artisans

The Sengol’s meaning is derived from the Tamil word ’Semmai’, meaning righteousness. This sengol has Lord Shiva’s vehicle, the Nandi (bull), symbolising the beholder of “nyaya” or justice.

Ten jewelry craftsmen of Vummidi Bangaru Chetty jewelers in Chennai were handpicked for the job of crafting the sengol.

The Sengol is made in silver and plated with gold. A team of ten craftsmen took about 15 days to complete the job. A small pooja was performed before handing the sengol over to the Atheenam.

The Sengol is exquisite, measuring 5 feet and with rich workmanship from top to bottom.

The Sengol’s orb, which symbolises the world, is mounted by a beautiful carving of the Nandi (bull), the vahana (vehicle) and gatekeeper of Lord Shiva.

The Nandi, with the unyielding gaze, is the protector and vehicle of dharma or justice.

In February 2021, Vummidi Bangaru Jewellers team has independently launched a search and found the Sengol.
